    The Industry

The screw machine industry in the United States is a multi-billion dollar industry, and is of strategic importance to the U.S. manufacturing base.

For many years, automatic screw machine operators have made use of mechanical cams for controlling turret slide motion on Brown & Sharpe screw machines. This technique, while consistent with the state of technology at the time the machines were produced, has some significant drawbacks in terms of the time (both calendar and labor) required to set up a screw machine for a particular job.

The condition of the industry today is such that screw machine operators are receptive to retrofitting their machines with computer numerical control (CNC) technology. Such technology has become commonplace in the machine tool industry in general. Screw machine operators are facing increasing competitive pressure, making improvements in efficiency imperative.
